Cleo is a contemporary mother of teenage children, a farm wife, and a teacher. When the high school sweetheart she married is suddenly gone, she faces life without financial or emotional support. She is caught between the needs of her children, the demands of the farm, and its indebtedness, and her own goals. Her nearest neighbor, Jess, offers friendship, pleasure, and caring but he has built his life in the farm community Cleo wants to leave. The few relatives Cleo and her children have left and the nearby circle of friends support the wounded family.
